About Emmanuel Oberg (3 min.)

Emmanuel Oberg is a screenwriter, bestselling author and creative consultant with a passion for storytelling and a knack for solving script problems. He has been working in the film and TV industry for more than twenty-five years, writing and developing projects for major studios and independent producers in Europe and the U.S.

Emmanuel started his career as a script reader for StudioCanal in Paris, where he honed his talent for spotting potential in screenplays assessing feature film projects co-produced with the U.S. such as “The Silence of the Lambs”, “Chaplin” or “Under Siege”. He soon wrote, directed and co-produced “Game Over”, a multi-award-winning short film and started working as a script consultant for independent producers, sharing his time between London and Paris.

He moved to London permanently in 2006 to become Senior Development Executive at the UK Film Council. Soon after this, he sold his first feature film script to Warner Bros, a supernatural horror called “Ghosthunters”, co-written with award-winning director John McKay (“Crush”, “1745”, “Katy”).

He then continued to write for various companies, such as StudioCanal, Working Title / Universal, Gold Circle and Film4, working on both sides of the Atlantic with A-List talent such as director Asif Kapadia (“The Warrior”, “Amy”, “Senna”), writer and novelist Sarah Dunant (“Transgressions”, “Mapping the Edge”, “Blood and Beauty”) or producer Donald De Line (“The Italian Job”, “Body of Lies”, “Ready Player One”).

In parallel, Emmanuel also worked as a creative consultant on several feature films and TV series, helping writers and producers to improve their scripts and pitches. He collaborated with acclaimed director Marco Bellocchio on “The Traitor”, a biopic of mafia informant Tommaso Buscetta, which premiered in competition at Cannes in 2019. He also worked with BAFTA nominated writer David Joss Buckley on “Cold Courage”, an international political thriller based on the novels by Pekka Hiltunen, which aired on Viaplay in 2020 and AMC+ in 2021.

He designed and delivered a series of internationally acclaimed workshops including modules on thriller, comedy, animation and TV series writing, all based on his innovative Story-Type Method®. This method is a flexible and intuitive way to master story structure and genre, which Emmanuel introduces in his bestselling book series “Screenwriting Unchained”, “The Screenwriter’s Troubleshooter” and “Writing a Successful TV Series”. These books have been praised by industry professionals and aspiring writers alike for their practical and insightful advice.

Over the last few years, this content has been converted to interactive online courses based on an exclusive, cutting-edge platform. The latest release is a free online course and e-book on script development, “The Three Dimensions of Screenwriting”, published in 2024. Emmanuel’s goal is to share his knowledge and passion for storytelling with as many filmmakers as possible, and to help them unleash their creative potential.

Emmanuel is based in the UK, where he lives with his wife and their two daughters. He is currently focusing on writing and showrunning and is working on several original series, including a comedy, an action sci-fi thriller and a YA fantasy.
