I have just completed Emmanuel Oberg’s course Writing a Successful TV Series for the second time. Inspiring and encouraging as indeed it was the first time around but because there is so much to learn in a short time I found this time particularly stimulating.

I recently completed Emmanuel’s Screen Ireland/ TV Series Rewrite Programme stage 1 and if the only thing I learned was how to categorise my TV pitch, by genre and story type, I would have been stoked! But the course, including multiple case studies, offered so much more than that. Emmanuel is generous and incredibly efficient in how he shares information, remaining responsive to feedback throughout, while keeping the conversation on track. Would highly recommend!

The series rewrite programme is a must-do for all television writers, both emerging and experienced. Of all the schemes and courses I’ve done, Emmanuel’s story-type method was the most beneficial. Thanks to Screen Ireland and Screenplay Unlimited for allowing me to participate.

I’ve just completed the 2025-2026 Screen Ireland Series Rewrite Programme Stage 1 with him and a bunch of fellow creatives and look forward to Stage 2 if I’m successful with my application.

Taking part in Stage 1 of “Writing a Successful TV Series” with Emmanuel Oberg was a genuinely positive and enriching experience. The inclusive online format meant I could fully participate even with a young baby at home, which made the training accessible and manageable. Emmanuel’s sessions were incredibly informative, using a wide range of TV shows to clearly illustrate different structures and formats. The breakout rooms were especially valuable, offering space to discuss ideas with other participants and deepen our understanding through shared experience. The visual tools and diagrams provided throughout the workshop helped me grasp how successful TV series are built, making complex concepts feel practical and applicable. Overall, it was a supportive, engaging and highly useful introduction to developing a TV project.

The course was super-informative and well-designed with easy access to all materials. Emmanuel shared with us amazing case studies and answered all our questions incisively. And, he generously provided us with lots of free materials as well. For me it was fascinating to learn about story type and structure following Maslow’s Pyramid. It really helped me. Emmanuel is a very engaging, knowledgeable and patient tutor. I was looking forward eagerly to every online session and loved this course very much! I doubt if there is anyone in the world of screenplay writing – for film and/or TV – that would not gain greatly from this course, whether they are starting out or seasoned veterans. Indeed, season veterans, steeped in other outmoded approaches to screenplay writing could probably benefit the most. Emmanuel, as is evident from his writings on the subject, in three books, is not only fiercely passionate about the subject but also driven by a deep desire to pass on all that he has learned. Better still, he does so with great humour, which makes even difficult paradigms easier to take. I could and do heavily recommend this course.

What I liked is that the conclusion states that this is not supposed to be a one size fits all approach. It is really a tool box for examining your story and others stories so that you can deduce what is missing or misplaced in your own story. Comparison, observation and critical thinking among the tools required.

This makes me think this is a story mechanics course. True auto enthusiasts know that there is art in maintaining great works, such as classic cars. Because there are so many moving parts and core components it takes a passion and precision to deliver a smooth ride. Something rarely appreciated by the consumer.

In much the same way I feel this course has delivered a system to measure and examine parts of a story that can assist the writer to determine how to improve performance of their projects. Thank you Emmanuel.
