This workshop was a brilliant experience – a time to really take stock of what you’ve got. Emmanuel provided the structure to look at our series with fresh and objective eyes, to consciously examine the choices we were making while never undermining the often unconscious creative process. Doing the workshop has made us much clearer about what is working and what’s not and will help not just with our current project but with all future ones.

‘The Rewrite Stuff’ tackles the same old script problems with a completely new toolbox. It’s a real game changer. The breakout rooms are fantastic, but the programme truly shines in Emmanuel’s one-to-one sessions, where he asks exactly the right questions to unlock better storytelling.

During this intensive, ground-breaking week, it was our daily privilege to be led by Emmanuel (and each other), to better series development via his ground-breaking but, crucially, non-prescriptive approach. Emmanuel helped us re-examine our series from multiple angles to enhance the creative punch, audience reach, potential longevity and scope of our projects. The course workbook provoked productive discussions with my script editor and pointed us to solutions that have transformed the series. That workbook also helped to signpost discussions and feedback with the very talented and insightful group of fellow writers. The reading and viewing in advance of the workshop in tandem with the online course elevated my understanding of the mechanics of successful series via concrete examples. Finally it is a mark of a truly visionary and versatile process that so many series wildly diverse in tone and range were demonstrably improved during the week. An unexpected bonus was seeing our abilities to pitch soar. Moving forward with a detailed time-bound action plan for the work now is challenging and also exciting – as we get to see how far we can bring the projects along with these new tools.

His unique methodology crystallises your ideas and pinpoints where the gaps lie in your story to make it the best it can be. The course also provided shared learning from our fellow writers and their TV projects across multiple genre . We had plenty of laughs along the way too.

This course was really great. Emmanuel goes through everything in such detail. It’s a fresh new way of looking at your series and provides loads of tools to take it to the next level. The immersive week, engaging with other writers and projects, with Emmanuel always there for advice and guidance, was both inspiring and exhilarating. It culminated in a one on one with Emmanuel on the last day which encapsulated all the work we had done in the week as he gave great feedback on how best to move forward with the series. When I first arrived at Emmanuel Oberg’s tv series rewrite workshop – I was nervous. One of the first things we were asked to do was to go around the room and deliver our elevator pitch. Cut to 4 days later, and I was actually excited to deliver my revised pitch! Emmanuel managed to curate a brilliant group of writers who all shared a passion for their own project and a willingness to enter deep and thoughtful discussions on each others work. It was a really productive, creative and fun few days and I believe I have made some new friends along the way. It was also an opportunity to tackle any plot holes, character weaknesses and any areas that could become problematic in the future. Every time our group sat down to critique our projects, it was from a new perspective guided by Emmanuel. I found the few days, followed by a one-on-one with Emmanuel, truly invaluable. I am fizzing with ideas and can’t wait to work further. Could not recommend this more.

Emmanuel’s ‘strand maps’ are one of the most useful tools I have utilised since I was introduced to them. If you don’t know what a ‘strand map’ is, I highly recommend reading one of his books or signing up for a workshop. Your storytelling will thank you for it.
