Happy New Year everyone!
We all had a fabulous time in Letterkenny last week during the first edition of our hands-on Feature-length Film & HETV Rewrite Workshop, "The Rewrite Stuff - 12 Ways to a Stronger Screenplay".

This project-led event is aimed at participants who have either done the main Advanced Development live workshop or have followed the Advanced Development online course, so that everyone speaks the same language and shares the same references from day one. This allows us to focus on the projects and on the group rather than on theory.
This programme is supported by Fís Éireann / Screen Ireland through the Screen Stakeholders Funding Scheme

Adverse weather in Letterkenny led to a few last-minute changes, such as organising a simultaneous Zoom call so that those unable to attend in person due to the snowstorm and icy roads could still join the group sessions remotely, but otherwise the event took place as planned.

I'm very grateful to all the participants for being so generous, focused and enthusiastic during the workshop and for their kind words afterwards, to Fís Éireann/Screen Ireland for supporting this six-month programme through the Screen Stakeholders Funding Scheme, and to the Donegal Film Office and the Regional Cultural Centre for their support in relation to the one-week in-person event in Letterkenny.

The participants selected for this workshop were eighteen writers, directors and producers developing twelve feature film or HETV projects. They were either working as a development team or as a solo writers joining forces during the workshop. They all embraced the challenge and it went very well. Unfortunately, the networking event kindly organised by Donegal Film Office had to be cancelled due to adverse weather, but we gathered instead informally at a local pub for a joyful evening, complete with traditional Irish music and singing.

One of the reasons for delivering this workshop in Co. Donegal was to develop links between film industry professionals in the North-west of Ireland (seven participants were from Sligo, Mayo, Donegal or Derry) and those in the rest of the island. As part of this, Eileen Rafferty and David Stevens presented their upcoming Errigal Studios, an ambitious virtual production stage in Ireland at the heart of spectacular Donegal, expected to open in 2025.
Jeremy Howard, our welcoming host in Letterkenny (at the centre in the picture below), also kindly gave us a tour of the many rooms, stages and resources available at the Regional Cultural Centre.

All the participants have had an individual meeting to define a clear direction for their next draft, and will have a follow-up meeting by the end of May to discuss their rewrite before final revisions. According to them, the whole week was stimulating and inspiring, which is exactly what we were aiming for!

And here are a few testimonials from the participants of this Feature Film & HETV Rewrite Workshop:
Feeling Inspired & Grateful!

Feeling very inspired after a 4 day intensive workshop with Emmanuel at The Regional Cultural Centre in Letterkenny. It was so great to be surrounded by such talented filmmakers who also shared their own projects that were in development. Myself and my writing partner Patricia were creatively pushed to find new ways into telling our screenplay. By using Emmanuel’s tools we found a whole new range of possibility to play with in our writing.
I’m excited to see how I can use Emmanuel’s tools for my future writing projects and really believe them to be so helpful and thought provoking. Thank you Emmanuel!
Another great workshop by Emmanuel

Thank you so much Emmanuel for the excellent Feature Film Rewrite Workshop. You gathered a great bunch of people together and all the sessions were extremely useful, practical and inspiring. The workshop was a huge help to Kate and I in our finding a focus for the next draft of our screenplay, GAMMY. I will unquestionably use many of the tools discussed in The Rewrite Stuff – 12 Ways To A Stronger Screenplay in all of my feature film projects going forward. This was my third workshop with you and I look forward to more in the future.
Rewarding & Invigorating

The Feature Rewrite Workshop is a powerfully stimulating experience. The feedback from fellow filmmakers is hugely valuable while the guidance from Emmanuel Oberg is eye-opening and energising. Through the course we have explored different avenues for our project, landing on an approach that has unlocked new potential and fired progress. We left the workshop feeling invigorated and inspired.
I would recommend this course to any writer looking to progress their script.

The Feature Rewrite workshop with Emmanuel was an enormous help pushing our project to the next stage. The tools he provided, the insights he shared and the enthusiasm & passion for what he does is outstanding. I would recommend this course to any writer looking to progress their script. There is so much to learn from Emmanual’s methods while he still encourages everyone to trust their unique story telling abilities. An added bonus was getting to work with the other talented and fun participants throughout the workshop.
Emmanuel’s workshop was highly informative

Emmanuel’s workshop was highly informative and demystified certain story structure methods. His warm, friendly nature makes learning an incredibly positive experience and I highly recommend it to writers or producers seeking to package their creative projects for development or production financing.
Invaluable Tools

Emmanuel’s unique approach to storytelling provides another way to evaluate and improve your project. I was struggling with a design that was overly complicated. Discovering which story type best described what I was trying to achieve (it was not obvious) helped me streamline elements around the antagonist which otherwise would have required even more complication to solve. In addition, having a room full of creatives giving feedback on two versions of a pitch was illuminating and invigorating.
An incredible creative opportunity

The Screen Ireland Feature Film Rewrite Workshop in Letterkenny was an incredible creative opportunity and a really wonderful chance to dig into our feature film project with a group of supportive and talented fellow writers and producers under the guidance of Emmanuel Oberg. Emmanuel’s Story Type method allowed us to breathe new life into our film, and to start 2025 on a creative high point.
Enjoyable and insightful

As a creative producer, I found the ‘Story Type’ Method online course and in-person workshop really useful in giving me and writers I’m working with a common language to help develop the scripts on our slate. Emmanuel is a great communicator and our sessions were both enjoyable and insightful.
An enlightening experience

Surrounded by talented filmmakers, we were able to dive deep into the core of our script and explore new approaches to our screenplay. Emmanuel’s unique methods and the collaborative environment made for an enlightening experience, addressing core storytelling issues while fostering meaningful discussions. I highly recommend his workshops to any writer or producer looking to develop their scripts. I left the workshop at The Regional Cultural Centre in Letterkenny feeling inspired and energised. Thank you so much Emmanuel for the excellent Feature Film Rewrite Workshop and for pushing us creatively.
Re-interrogating, Re-defining, Re-imagining,

Spending 5 days in snowy seclusion with Emmanuel, eleven other talented screenwriting individuals and teams, and my own relatively newborn story has been energising and inspirational. As a filmmaker who never went to film school, I’ve read a lot of screenwriting theories and attended a lot of courses. This workshop, and the book / online tutorial required to be completed in advance of same, addresses the core issues of screen storytelling with a novel approach that is both radical and super-practical. For me, the use of the Maslow hierarchy of needs in analysing the likely audience appeal of one’s story is a deceptively simple but powerful example of how Emmanuel gives you new tools to crack open your story’s potential. In the one-to-one sessions, he asks astute and challenging questions. In the group sessions, he constantly facilitates discerning and supportive peer-to-peer feedback. I left with new ideas about how to improve my current screenplay, new strategies which I know will serve me on future projects, and a roomful of new friends. I would heartily recommend.
Peace of mind for the descending writer

Having recently completed the online course, I was grateful to have direct access to both Emmanuel, other writers and creatives for a number of days. Emmanuel is a natural host and our initial meeting in person, immediately put my anxiety at ease. During the first day of introductions and pitching, I found value in listening to others in the group, even though our own project was at a different stage.
Each days session’s were well structured and immensely useful in that they gave adequate time for us to think and work out some initial problems and barriers. Figuring out the type, style and ambition of the story we wanted to tell, was the jumping off point for our project and we were afforded the time to do this in a safe environment, and with plenty of support. These sessions also gave me to opportunity to acknowledge my own personal writing style. Having the time and space to have real conversations and focus exclusively on our project was a huge help. It is not something we frequently get a chance to do and it was the turning point needed to move our project forward.
I am very grateful for the opportunity it has given me to focus on my own writing style, while having the additional support of the course and lessons learnt during the workshop as backup and reference to, for when we get to that stage with our script.
Enhancing Storytelling with Emmanuel Oberg’s Screenwriting Framework

As a longtime fan of Emmanuel Oberg’s Screenwriting Unchained book, taking the online course was a game-changer for me. Diving deeper into tools like Story-Type and Genre, the Maslow Hierarchy of Needs, and the fractal nature of story structure made complex concepts practical and actionable. What stood out most was applying these tools directly to my current project. Concepts like managing conflict, crafting a satisfying ending, and the nuanced use of planting and payoff started to click in new ways, yielding immediate results.
The hands-on approach transformed my creative process, and I’m already seeing how these techniques elevate my storytelling. I can’t wait for the Hands-On Rewrite Workshop next week to refine it further.
I am genuinely inspired

Emmanuel possesses a remarkable ability to make complex concepts comprehensible and digestible. Beginning your first screenplay can be intimidating, and navigating the murkiness of a rewrite can often seem impossible. However, his process transforms these challenges into an approachable and even invigorating journey. After much procrastination, I am genuinely inspired and eager to dive in and bring my story to life.
